A HISTORY OF SUCCESS


The group comes from the Department of Industrial Services of General Electric do Brasil S/A, the company's sector that provided services of maintenance, tests, calibrations, start up and commissioning, focusing mainly on products manufactured by it. With a highly specialized technical staff, it worked for clients in Brazil and several countries.

MPE was part of this department when, in May of 1979, the staff was split, creating a new management that focused on erections and special projects. From this onwards, it started to make industrial erection and turn key for various sectors, as: Petroleum, Airports, Steel industries and Ports.

At that time, General Electric was also a controller of SADE (Sul-Americana de Engenharia), a traditional erection company in South America, thus generating internal managing conflicts, sometimes hard to be solved.

In the middle of the 80's, General Electric, because of strategic changes, broke up with SADE and other companies of services' provision in other countries. Due to of this change of strategy, we conclude that the sector would be dissolved soon, as it was a part of Department GE, not a company.

From this onwards, the management started a long negotiation for purchasing the operation, concluded at the end of December of 1987.

A management buy out operation was programmed, in which a company called MPE was created, firstly, and then all the assets, liabilities and employees were transferred. On January 24th, 1988, it was sold to the two main managers.

The idealism, the belief in Brazil and its potential took the two main managers open shareholding interests to the other managers. That was a huge managing challenge, but it was successful and the great responsible one for the Group's future performance.

Everyone knows of Brazil's difficulties at that time, named as the lost decade, but the Group arose in this context. There were various economic plans, and all of them were defeated, but keeping a good growing rhythm every year.

During these years, diversification in engineering, industry and agribusiness brought the need for an operational reorganization, aiming at a better visualization and quickness in decisions.

The matrix holding "MPE S/A Participações e Administração - created two other ones - MPE Participações em Engenharia e Serviços S/A and MPE Participações em Agronegócios S/A - each one primarily focusing on its own objectives.

In Engineering, by means of companies like MPE - Montagens e Projetos Especiais S/A, EBE Epresa Brasileira de Engenharia S/A (65 years old), GEMON – Geral de Engenharia e Montagens S/A and EBSE – Empresa Brasileira de Solda Elétrica S/A (more than 80 years old), we are sure of its major contribution to the elevation of the national engineering, by the several works executed.

In Agribusiness, by means of Agromon S/A – Agricultura e Pecuária, Valença da Bahia Maricultura S/A, Sumol, Carroll’s Food do Brasil S/A, the Group has a highlighting presence in all these sectors.

The Group's entrance and participation in Agribusiness occurred much before the current highlighting stage of this sector, which has been responsible for the superavit in the balance of Brazil's balance of trade in the last years.

All this success is due to the first managers and colleagues, whose great majority is still together, to the new ones that have joined the Group during these years, and to Brazil, which gives great opportunities to everyone
